Elder Mark Bassett Dies at 59 After Brain Injury as LDS Missionary Push Faces Sudden Loss

SALT LAKE CITY, May 11, 2026, 16:06 MDT

  • Elder W. Mark Bassett, a senior leader within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Monday at 59 following a traumatic brain injury.
  • He was executive director for the church’s Missionary Department, managing global missionary operations.
  • The church hasn’t shared specifics about the incident, only confirming that Bassett was with family in St. George, Utah when it happened.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Monday that Elder W. Mark Bassett, General Authority Seventy, died May 11 following a traumatic brain injury. He was 59.

Bassett’s death leaves a key gap in the church’s missionary ranks just as leaders report a surge in missionary applications and the launch of additional missions. As executive director of the Missionary Department, he oversaw global efforts for both full-time proselytizing and service missions.

The church announced the sudden death of Elder W. Mark Bassett, saying in a statement it was “deeply saddened.” Bassett had been a General Authority Seventy since April 2016. That role places him in the church’s worldwide leadership, just under the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the hierarchy. The Church of Jesus Christ

The church said Bassett was with his family in St. George, Utah, at the time of the incident. Officials haven’t disclosed details about what took place, according to KSL.

Bassett was leading global missionary operations when he died. According to the church, his tenure coincided with “historic growth” in missionary work and a surge in the number of members choosing to serve—levels described as “unprecedented.” Churchofjesuschrist

On Monday, Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles posted on social media noting the church is seeing “remarkable growth in the number of missionary applications” as well as an uptick in the creation of new missions worldwide, Deseret News reported. Deseret News

Bassett addressed missionaries at the Provo Missionary Training Center on May 5—just days before he died. “The doctrine of Christ, that is our message,” he said, describing it as “the hinge point” for their mission work. Churchofjesuschrist

Bassett, in that same devotional, encouraged missionaries to “invite everyone to come” and guide them through what he described as the gate to eternal life. The church referenced his words when it announced his death. Churchofjesuschrist

Bassett, born Aug. 14, 1966, in Carmichael, California, picked up an accounting degree at Brigham Young University in 1991. After that, he headed into the wholesale auto auction world, eventually leading the Arizona Mesa Mission as president from 2007 to 2010.

What happens next in the Missionary Department remains unclear. No successor was named by the church, and there were no details on the nature of the injury or any word on possible changes to missionary plans.

Bassett leaves behind his wife, Angela, along with their children and grandchildren. The church said, “Elder Bassett will be deeply missed and always remembered for his great faith and dedicated service.” Kutv
