Manchester City vs Brentford Team News: Guardiola Makes Ake, Reijnders Calls As Arsenal Chase Tightens

MANCHESTER, England, May 9, 2026, 17:07 BST

Nathan Ake and Tijjani Reijnders have been named in Manchester City’s starting lineup for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Brentford, with Rodri left out as City look to maintain the chase on Arsenal. Ake and Reijnders come in for Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico Gonzalez for the 17:30 BST kickoff at the Etihad Stadium.

It’s a direct equation for City: they’re trailing Arsenal by five points, but with a match in hand. A victory here trims that deficit to just two, right before Arsenal face West Ham on Sunday.

This team sheet carries weight beyond tonight. Before kickoff, Manchester City’s table put Arsenal at 76 points from 35 games, City at 71 from 34—margin for error almost gone in the run-in.

City ruled out Rodri, Khusanov, and Josko Gvardiol for the Brentford game, citing fitness concerns. Gvardiol only just got back to training after a four-month layoff. Ruben Dias, meanwhile, appeared on the bench for the first time since that home fixture against Real Madrid in March.

City’s lineup featured Gianluigi Donnarumma between the sticks, with a back line of Matheus Nunes, Marc Guehi, Ake and Nico O’Reilly. Captain Bernardo Silva slotted into midfield alongside Reijnders and Rayan Cherki. Up front, Antoine Semenyo, Jeremy Doku and Erling Haaland led the attack. Brentford, on the other hand, named Caoimhin Kelleher in goal; defenders Aaron Hickey, Nathan Collins, Kristoffer Ajer and Michael Kayode; midfielders Mathias Jensen, Yehor Yarmolyuk and Mikkel Damsgaard; and a front three of Keane Lewis-Potter, Kevin Schade, and Igor Thiago.

On Friday, Guardiola indicated he’d check Rodri’s status post-training, but Rodri ultimately missed out on the squad. “Still he doesn’t feel completely comfortable,” Guardiola explained at the time. The manager sounded more upbeat about Gvardiol, though: “We are happy he’s back.” Manchester City FC

The manager had praise for Brentford’s run with Keith Andrews at the helm, calling it “not easy to replace Thomas [Frank]” and labeling their season “incredible”. Brentford arrived still in the mix for a European spot, so City faced a team with something real on the line, not just another straightforward Etihad date. Manchester City FC

Rayan Cherki, lining up behind Haaland, insisted City was still in the hunt. “As long as there’s hope, there’s life,” he told the club in an interview, stressing that City’s sole objective versus Brentford was “victory”. Manchester City FC

A race within the match: Haaland started out front on the Premier League scoring table with 25 goals, while Brentford’s Igor Thiago remained the lone player with a chance to overtake him, the Guardian’s live blog noted.

Brentford pose a noticeable threat to City. Lewis Jones, a Sky Sports football reporter, argued that City face “no margin for error,” highlighting their 2.72 expected goals conceded at Everton — expected goals, or xG, tracks the danger level of chances given up — as proof that teams are beginning to break down Guardiola’s defense. Right now, Doku’s the City player catching fire. Guardiola called the winger “amazing” ahead of the match, while City tallied four goals and two assists for Doku over his last five games. Manchester City FC

This one’s the Community Matchday for City, and the club plans to temporarily rebrand the Etihad as “The City in the Community Etihad Stadium” to spotlight its charity push. On the pitch, though, it’s strictly business—City have to grab the points, and then hope Arsenal slip up. Manchester City FC
