Orioles vs Marlins Tonight: Miami Holds Edge as Baltimore Tries to Stop Five-Game Slide

Miami, May 5, 2026, 18:22 (EDT)

  • Baltimore opens a three-game road series in Miami after being swept by the Yankees.
  • Sandy Alcantara starts for the Marlins, with sportsbooks making Miami a modest favorite.
  • Miami reshaped its pitching depth Tuesday by designating Chris Paddack for assignment.

The Baltimore Orioles open a three-game series against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night at loanDepot park, trying to halt a five-game slide while Miami leans on Sandy Alcantara in the first game of the set. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. EDT.

It matters now because Baltimore is already under pressure in early May. The Orioles are 15-20, have injuries in the rotation, and arrive in South Florida after a four-game sweep by the New York Yankees, a rough turn for a club that expected to stay in the American League East race.

Miami is not running away either. The Marlins are 16-19 and just lost three of four to the Philadelphia Phillies, including a 1-0 defeat Monday in which Aaron Nola threw six scoreless innings and Bryce Harper hit the only homer.

The opener is built around the pitching matchup. Baltimore lists right-hander Chris Bassitt at 2-2 with a 5.46 ERA, while Miami counters with Alcantara, 3-2 with a 3.04 ERA and 31 strikeouts. ERA, or earned run average, measures how many earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings.

Sportsbook markets also point toward Miami. Action Network listed the Marlins at -138 on the moneyline, meaning a bettor would need to risk $138 to win $100, while Baltimore was +118 and the total was set at 8.5 runs.

Ryan Minion, a contributing writer at Action Network, wrote that Tuesday’s matchup has “two starters heading in completely opposite directions” and backed Miami on the first-five innings moneyline, a wager limited to the first five innings rather than the full game. Action Network

Peter Dewey, senior editor for Sports Illustrated Betting, also leaned Miami, writing that “Alcantara is clearly the starter to trust in this matchup.” Dewey noted Baltimore’s losing streak and Bassitt’s shaky underlying numbers while picking the Marlins moneyline. SI

There is a clear but. Miami’s bullpen has been a weak point, with Camden Chat noting nine blown leads and closer Pete Fairbanks on the 15-day injured list because of nerve irritation. Baltimore’s chance is to keep the game close, force Miami away from Alcantara, and test the late innings.

The Marlins made one pitching move before the series, designating veteran right-hander Chris Paddack for assignment after he struggled to start his Miami tenure. Manager Clayton McCullough said Braxton Garrett and Robby Snelling were among the options for Paddack’s rotation spot, but nothing had been set before Tuesday’s game, MLB.com reported.

The rest of the series keeps the focus on pitching depth. MLB lists Brandon Young against Eury Pérez on Wednesday and Cade Povich against Max Meyer on Thursday, both also scheduled for 6:40 p.m. EDT at loanDepot park. MASN and Marlins.TV are listed as the television outlets.
