Sunrisers Hyderabad capitalized on Punjab Kings’ sloppy fielding, piling up 235 for 4 after a flurry of missed chances in their IPL 2026 clash on Wednesday. Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen both made Punjab pay, converting early reprieves into brisk half-centuries. Chasing 236 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Punjab stumbled out of the gate, losing both openers plus skipper Shreyas Iyer within the first four overs.
Punjab’s stumble couldn’t have come at a worse moment. Sitting atop the table with 13 points, PBKS faced a Sunrisers squad just one point behind in third, both teams stinging from recent losses. Kolkata Knight Riders had snapped SRH’s five-game streak, while Gujarat Titans had handed Punjab their own defeat.
Batters looked set to cash in. Ahead of the contest, Economic Times flagged that Hyderabad’s Pitch No. 2 was flat with short boundaries, while dew—nighttime moisture making the ball slippery—was expected to favor the side batting second.
Punjab won the toss and opted to bowl. “We will bowl first,” Iyer announced. SRH skipper Pat Cummins admitted he’d have picked to chase too, and noted that Nitish Kumar Reddy was back in the XI. NDTV Sports
In the eighth, Cooper Connolly spilled a simple catch in the deep, giving Kishan a lifeline. The Indian Express live blog noted that Kishan punished the mistake on the very last ball of the over, hammering a six—quick payback for the missed chance. Chahal, for his part, had already sent Travis Head packing earlier.
The wheels came off fast. Klaasen got a life when Shashank Singh put him down, then Lockie Ferguson let Kishan off the hook, and Prabhsimran Singh bungled a stumping off Chahal. Punjab coach Ricky Ponting didn’t hold back on air—he nearly “threw the microphone,” he admitted, and described the catching woes as “a bit of a virus.” India Today
For Chahal, the dropped chances brought an unwelcome statistic. According to The Times of India, six catches have gone down off his bowling this season—no other bowler in IPL 2026 has seen more. Shashank has missed four himself, putting him just behind Mumbai Indians’ Naman Dhir among all fielders.
Kishan hammered 55 from 32 balls, while Klaasen piled on 69 off 43. Earlier, Abhishek Sharma cracked 35 in just 13 deliveries and Head smashed 38 from 19, getting the innings off to a flying start. Reddy chipped in with an unbeaten 29 off 13, as SRH cleared the ropes 17 times. Marco Jansen, bowling for Punjab, was taken for 61 runs in his four overs.
But things weren’t finished at the break. With Hyderabad’s pitch holding up for a chase, Punjab still had plenty of muscle to call on—Connolly, Marcus Stoinis, Shashank. For SRH, the danger came down to just one partnership going deep. Punjab’s problem? Their catching had been so shaky, mistakes weren’t really an option anymore.
The box score credits Chahal with just one wicket, but there was a lot more swirling around him—created opportunities that slipped through, key drops, and a playoff hopeful handing out extra lifelines to an opponent who didn’t need them. One straightforward catch, and the whole innings could have tilted.
