CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia, May 9, 2026, 17:06 (EDT)
Florida State squeezed past Virginia Tech 2-1 on Saturday, clinching the 2026 ACC Softball Tournament and locking up the program’s 20th ACC tournament crown, plus the conference’s automatic NCAA spot. The Seminoles, seeded No. 1, move to 49-8 with the win. Virginia Tech, the No. 3 seed, heads home 46-10.
The clock’s ticking. The NCAA softball selection show lands Sunday, 7 p.m. ET, on ESPN2. That’s when fans will finally see the full 64-team bracket and learn all 16 regional sites.
The debate has shifted to seeding—qualification is no longer in doubt. Brady Vernon at On3/Softball America says Florida State is “locked into a hosting spot.” The real question: can the Seminoles crack the top eight and set themselves up for a smoother run early? On3
Virginia Tech got on the board early, with Jordan Lynch coming around from second after Michelle Chatfield’s infield hit—a Florida State miscue making the run possible. Then, in the second, Florida State punched back. Kennedy Harp ripped a double that brought Bella Ruggiero across, and Harp later scored herself on a passed ball, per Virginia Tech’s recap.
Just a hair separated the two teams in the box score—Virginia Tech finished with four hits, Florida State with three. Jazzy Francik worked six innings for the win, giving up one unearned run, three hits, and striking out six. Emma Mazzarone took the loss on the Hokies’ side.
Here’s the risk for Florida State: a championship decided by a single run leaves everything exposed—one swing, one throw, or one umpire’s call, and it’s over. The Seminoles got the job done, just. But Virginia Tech wasn’t overwhelmed, and narrow leads like this don’t usually survive deep into postseason softball.
Florida State punched its ticket to the final after dismantling Stanford 9-0 in the semifinals, wrapping things up early with a five-inning run-rule. That blowout ended Stanford’s 15-game surge through the ACC. According to the Cardinal, this was their first shutout loss of the season.
Virginia Tech punched its ticket to the title game with a 5-0 shutout of Duke, marking its first trip to the ACC championship since 2012. According to the ACC, every Hokies run in the semifinal crossed the plate via the long ball—Kylie Aldridge capped it off with a two-run homer in the seventh. ([Atlantic Coast Conference][6])
Florida State’s semifinal featured plenty of production across the roster. Ashtyn Danley delivered a 3-for-3 performance, stacking up two doubles, crossing the plate twice and driving in three runs, according to the ACC. Bella Dimitrijevic, for her part, gave up just a single hit over four frames against Stanford. ([Atlantic Coast Conference][7])
Nothing about the conference slate came easy. Florida State wrapped up ACC play with a 21-3 record, narrowly edging Duke’s 20-4 mark. Virginia Tech, Stanford, and Louisville all posted 18-6 finishes in league games. ([Atlantic Coast Conference][8])
Florida State came into the week after its first ACC tournament trophy since 2023. The Seminoles’ record is loaded: 19 ACC tournament championships, 19 regular-season titles, and appearances in 27 of the tournament’s 32 title games, the school’s tournament preview shows.
The Seminoles have the trophy, but now it’s about the bracket. All eyes shift to the seed line and the path ahead—how the committee values a tight win against a Virginia Tech squad that pushed them to the final inning will matter.
