Torino Stun Sassuolo Late As Simeone Extends Home Run In Serie A

TURIN, May 8, 2026, 23:03 CEST

  • Torino rallied, overturning a deficit to edge Sassuolo 2-1.
  • Goals from Giovanni Simeone and Marcus Holmgren Pedersen came just four minutes apart.
  • Torino moved up to 12th; Sassuolo held on to 10th.

Torino flipped the script with two goals in just four minutes, coming from behind after Kristjan Thorstvedt put Sassuolo ahead in the second half. The 2-1 win Friday extends Torino’s unbeaten streak at home in Serie A to five.

This one’s about momentum, not medals. With Inter locking up Serie A, teams like Torino and Sassuolo—stuck mid-table—are left scrapping for places, sharpening form, and figuring out next season’s squad moves as the campaign winds down.

Thorstvedt put Sassuolo in front just after the break, striking in the 51st minute. Giovanni Simeone pulled Torino level, and Marcus Holmgren Pedersen then finished off the comeback. According to Football Italia, Torino climbed to 12th place, while Sassuolo stayed 10th.

Torino shuffled their lineup ahead of kick-off, handing starts to Matteo Prati and Alieu Njie. Sassuolo, fresh off last weekend’s victory against Milan, made several switches too—restoring Woyo Coulibaly, Josh Doig, Luca Lipani, Christian Volpato, and Andrea Pinamonti to the XI.

Sassuolo came into the match on the back of a 2-0 win over Milan that had turned a few heads last week, while Torino were looking to rebound after a 2-0 loss at Udinese. Before kickoff, Racing Post’s James Milton noted Torino’s home advantage but pointed out Sassuolo’s away form and leaky recent matches could bring goals.

The prediction stood. After a goalless opening 45, Torino grabbed three goals and managed to extend their late-season unbeaten run at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.

Torino’s comeback doesn’t fix their patchy performances, and the heavy goals conceded this campaign keep them far from the European spots. Sassuolo, on the other hand, squandered their advantage—a tough one to swallow considering recent results had given their season a boost.

Milan, Juventus, Roma, and Como are still tangled in the Champions League race, while Inter sits clear at the summit. Torino and Sassuolo aren’t part of that scramble, but Friday’s outcome offered Torino a tighter ending to what’s been a patchy season.
